| "PRETENDER 2001" begins with two men sitting in a projection room,
looking at slides of Jarod, Miss Parker, Sydney, Broots, Mr. Raines, Lyle,
Mr. Parker and Ethan. One of the two men is giving the other an explanation
of each of them ... who they are and why he thinks that they do the things
relating to The Centre and Jarod that they do. At the end of the
explanation, one of the men asks the other if it is true that Jarod was
stolen as a child. There is an expectant pause, the man giving the
explanation gives the other a long look ... but says nothing. The
next scene is from the Pilot episode ... where a very young Jarod tells
Sydney, behind the two-way mirror, that he has finished replicating the
building in a picture on the wall as he sings the Cree-Craw song.
We find ourselves looking at the explosion in the subway from the end of the 4th season ... it's such a terrible explosion that it blows a manhole cover off hard enough to toss a car into the air. Moments later, through a smoky haze, we see Miss Parker, trapped beneath some debris, but otherwise unharmed. She's trying to free herself before something hanging in flames from the ceiling falls on her, when he hears a sound. She calls out for help and is astounded to see her Mother approach her through the mists - offering her a hand on which she is wearing a tear shaped diamond ring. Miss Parker cannot believe her eyes! She knows her Mother to be dead and yet there she is! She asks her Mother how this is possible and Catherine Parker smiles at her and replies, "Ask your Father. He knows all the secrets." In the next instant, we see Miss Parker blanching away from a shaft of light in her eyes. The light is coming from Sydney's penlight and Broots is asking her if she's okay. She tells him she's fine; the three of them, Broots, Sydney and Miss Parker are in Sydney's office. Sydney is telling her that there is no neurological damage and that the psychological damage from the trauma of the explosion could account for her erratic behavior. Miss Parker wants to know who thinks she's been acting erratically and Broots says that she was found outside a manhole cover on street level ... she's lucky to be alive. He asks Miss Parker if she's going to tell Sydney about the dream ... but Miss Parker swears that it was not a dream ... that she was "saved." Sydney tells Miss Parker that "dreams are a reflection of the soul" - but Miss Parker continues to insist that she was saved by her Mother and that she's going to find out what the secrets her Father knows are. With Ethan, in a room somewhere else, Jarod is having his own dreams ... but his aren't about being saved, they are about being killed, as he relives the moment when Raines stopped his heart. He awakens to find Ethan looking at some of the DSA's of Jarod's life. Ethan comments that Jarod is a Pretender and that he can become anyone that he wants to be ... even an astronaut. Jarod says, "Yes, but I don't know who I am." A newscast comes on the TV set and the announcer remarks on how amazing it was that no one was hurt in the recent explosion in the subway tunnel. Jarod says that he hopes Miss Parker is safe and Ethan tells him that his "inner voices" have told him that Miss Parker is fine. Jarod begins to pack, saying that as long as Miss Parker is safe, they are not, because The Centre will come for them. As Jarod packs, he hears another news item - this one about an NSA agent named Edward Ballinger, who has recently been shot by a terrorist. The item gets his full attention and Ethan asks Jarod if he knows this man. Jarod tells Ethan that he did know Eddie ... then Ethan hears his "inner voices" and says, "He was a Pretender, too." Jarod explains that he found out that there were other Pretenders at The Centre and that Eddie was one of them. He and Eddie escaped together. Broots and Miss Parker are going through Mr. Parker's house, looking for him. It soon becomes apparent that he has disappeared and it looks as though he was forcibly made to leave. The last thing he was doing was eating dinner and watching the DSA where he shot Raines and Miss Parker comments that it was the last time she saw him. By using the "redial" feature, Miss Parker determines that the last person Mr. Parker called on his cell phone was Lyle. There are no clues regarding who might have taken him or where he might be. At The Centre, Miss Parker interrupts Lyle while he's talking to two pretty Oriental girls to ask him if he's seen their Father or if he knows where he is. He tells her that he hasn't seen or heard from him in a couple of days but that he's not worried about it. He teases Miss Parker about hearing "inner voices" and then reveals that he has taken Mr. Raines thumb and had it grafted on to his hand, to replace the thumb that the Yakuza took from him. Miss Parker doesn't trust him and tells Broots to check his phone records. At the NSA, Jarod Morse runs into Agent Andrea Zane, Ballinger's partner, who is trying to read Eddie's notes with another Agent. Jarod translates them for Agent Zane, telling her that they are written in Apache, which the U.S. used as a code during the second world war (small blooper here, folks ... Navajo was the Native American language that was used as a code during World War II, not Apache). Jarod tells Agent Zane that he has been sent to stop the terrorist who attempted to kill agent Ballinger. Eddie's partner is suspicious of Jarod's credentials, which (as always) are impressive, because she has never heard of him before. He throws her off her guard by letting her know how much he knows about her instead. As they continue speaking, it's Agent Zane's turn to throw Jarod off guard, when she tells him that they have dubbed the terrorist "the Chameleon" because he can be anyone that he wants to be! In a storeroom at The Centre, Sydney and Miss Parker are looking through all the things that Jarod has left in his lairs for the past 4 years. Miss Parker asks Sydney what he hears when he goes through all of the reminders ... and he tells her that he hears the child desperately looking for his Mother, he hears the child in a man's body, making incredible discoveries about life, wondering who he is ... and sometimes, he hears his own guilt for having contributed to the theft of Jarod's life. Miss Parker agrees that they can all hear that part. Sydney tells her that the things that he hears are only memories. Miss Parker, like Catherine Parker, hears things on a different plane of sensory perception. To convince Miss Parker that what he is saying is true - Sydney relates a part of Miss Parker's vision to her about which she did not previously tell him. He explains to her that he knows about it because Catherine Parker described the same vision to him before she died. He tells Miss Parker that he attempted to help Catherine refine her sensory skills, but he does not want to help Miss Parker, because when he tried to help Catherine ... she ended up dead. Back at the NSA, Agent Zane is telling Jarod that the Chameleon is unmasking and then killing the NSA's deepest undercover spies. As Agent Zane is briefing Jarod they are told that the Chameleon has been located. An NSA team quickly assembles and rushes to the location, but end up doing nothing more than putting a million bullets into the figure of a clown which someone has placed on a revolving platform to make it seem from the outside as though someone were moving behind a drawn shade. As they examine the room for clues, Jarod finds that the Chameleon has left several pictures of his past identities - but instead of having his own face on them, the Chameleon has superimposed Jarod's - making it look as though Jarod is the pretender. Jarod manages to pocket the clues before Agent Zane sees them and now he knows that the Chameleon has drawn him into his game and made him a part of it. But how could he possibly know who Jarod really is? Sydney is attempting to help Miss Parker get in touch with her "inner sense." He tells her to relax and open herself up ... and in a few moments she is hearing "T.T." over and over again. Broots writes it down. Jarod and Ethan are looking at the pictures that Jarod lifted from the clown-room - the ones that have had Jarod's head digitally attached to the bodies. Jarod tells Ethan that "someone is playing with my head and whenever someone is playing with my head, it usually comes from one place." After that, he places a video phone call to Sydney at The Centre. When the call goes through, Miss Parker and Broots are still in Sydney's office. Sydney expresses relief at knowing that Jarod is still alive but Jarod accuses The Centre of using an ID picture that he made for one of his pretends a couple of years prior to "doctor" the photos that Jarod found earlier. Sydney denies that The Centre had anything to do with it but tells Jarod that he'll look into it. Just as they are about to end the call, Ethan walks into the picture and says "Double T" ... he says that the voices keep saying "Double T." Suddenly, Miss Parker is very interested in the video call and rushes to Sydney's monitor. Ethan tells Miss Parker that he's glad she's alive and Miss Parker tells Ethan that she's glad he's alive, too. Jarod says that nobody ever dies at The Centre, but Ethan says that Catherine Parker died there and somehow the answers are tied to "Double T." Jarod wants to know if it's a case file or if it has something to do with him and Sydney says, "not to my knowledge." Jarod tells him to find out and reminds him that he wants the truth - then breaks the video connection. Miss Parker tells Broots to check on the "Double T" and he leaves. In Jarod's room, Ethan wants to know why Jarod didn't tell Sydney and Miss Parker about the Chameleon. Jarod tells Ethan that it was "need to know" and they didn't. At the National Security Agency, Jarod is looking through the Chameleon files when he sees a picture of Eddie and his family on the desk. He is reminded of the day at The Centre when Eddie told him that he was afraid he was going to be killed and when Jarod made the decision to include Eddie in his plan to escape. He also remembers when he found out that The Centre was selling their simulations to the highest bidder, no matter why whoever was paying for them wanted them. Agent Zane tells Jarod that CSI couldn't find any clues from the room with the clown and then goes outside of his office to talk to Agent Tracer. As Jarod watches her through the window, he receives a phone call from the Chameleon. Jarod asks him who he is and he tells him "I am you. You are me. We are one in the same." The Chameleon goes on to tell Jarod all about himself ... he knows who Jarod really is! At the end of the conversation, he tells Jarod that he considers it a mistake that Eddie Ballinger lived and he doesn't make mistakes twice. He knows that Eddie has come out of his coma - something confirmed to Jarod moments after hanging up. Jarod and Agent Zane rush to the hospital and enter Eddie's room with guns drawn, ready to defend his life - but they find only Eddie there ... coming out of a bathroom, bandage still on his head. He recognizes Jarod - and Jarod quickly establishes that he is in the midst of a pretend so that Eddie doesn't give him away to Agent Zane. After Agent Zane leaves the room, Jarod hugs Eddie and tells him how happy he is to see him again, but Eddie pulls a gun on Jarod! He tells Jarod that strange things have been happening and he doesn't know who he can trust. Jarod eventually convinces Eddie that he has nothing to fear from him and they begin to talk about the Chameleon. Eddie tells Jarod that before they escaped from The Centre, he had been working on a simulation for the NSA called "Starpoints" ... designed to create undercover identities for the agency's top 5 covert agents. Four of the five agents have already been killed by the Chameleon - Eddie is determined that he won't get to number five. He tells Jarod that at the moment the Chameleon shot him, he had the feeling that the Chameleon knew who he was. Jarod tells Eddie that he feels the same way - as though the Chameleon knows who he is. Jarod asks Eddie if the initials "T.T." mean anything to him. Eddie obviously recognizes the initials ... but says that it couldn't be "Double T"... before he can say anymore, the sound of a helicopter is heard getting closer. Eddie goes to the window to get a look at it and is shot multiple times by a man in the helicopter! Jarod fires back, but the helicopter is already moving away and the shots were to no avail. Eddie lies in Jarod's grasp and Jarod asks him if he saw the Chameleon. Eddie gasps that he "was a dead man" and then dies. As they take Eddie's body away, Jarod calls Ethan and tells him that he's learned that "T.T." is a man with ties to The Centre and that he needs to know who that man is. Ethan tells Jarod that he'll do his best. Ethan stares into the flame of a candle and says "Tommy." Miss Parker slams on the brakes of her car and barely manages to stop before running Broots down. She was in the midst of re-living the vision with her Mother and wasn't aware of her surroundings! Broots tells Miss Parker that he's gone through The Centre files and has come up with one man who fit the profile for "T.T." ... Dr. Tommy Thompson. Broots and Miss Parker take off to go find him. In Eddie's office, Jarod is remembering how Eddie was sure that The Centre planned to kill him when they terminated his program and how he changed his escape plan to accommodate two people, so that he wouldn't have to leave Eddie behind. He is interrupted by Agent Zane, who tells Jarod that she had the feeling that Eddie was hiding something, always looking over his shoulder. She tells Jarod that she has the same feeling about him. Agent Tracer puts a wireless tap on the phone ... it's connected to his laptop, so that if the Chameleon calls again, they can track the call. Agent Zane asks Jarod if he has any idea why the Chameleon got in touch with him, but before he has to make up an answer, the phone rings. It's the Chameleon, congratulating Jarod on inheriting Eddie's case and telling him where to find the body of the helicopter pilot. The Chameleon is making the phone call from the beach, in front of a white marina boat and he's holding an origami bird, like the one that Jarod left behind as a clue for The Centre, up in the air so that it can flutter in the wind. The Chameleon stayed on the line long enough for the trace to go through ... it came from a boat in Delaware ... in Blue Cove! Miss Parker is asking Sydney about Dr. Tommy Thompson. Sydney says he only remembers that he was recruited to The Centre by Mr. Raines and that Mr. Parker actively disliked him. Miss Parker presses Sydney for details, but he tells her that he never knew why Mr. Parker felt that way. Broots comes in and tells Miss Parker that he hasn't found Tommy Thompson yet and that someone else is looking for him, too. All of his files were already accessed by Mr. Lyle by the time that Broots got to them. On the beach at Blue Cove, Jarod and the team from the NSA are going through the boat, looking for something that will lead them to the Chameleon. Jarod can see The Centre from the front of the boat ... being that close is making him uncomfortable. Inside the boat, the Chameleon has assembled all of the things that Jarod has discovered in the 4 years since he escaped ... Mr. Potato Head, Slinky, PEZ, Twinkies ... it's all there. Agent Zane remarks that it looks like the Chameleon is looking for a lost childhood. In the middle of it all, there is a pair of opera glasses on top of a book that teaches sign language. Jarod knows that these are clues left for him, since he is the only one who knows that they are the only two items that are out of place with all the others. As Jarod thinks about the significance of the clues, he is startled to hear Mr. Lyle's voice outside. Mr. Lyle is out jogging with a couple of sweepers and stops to ask the NSA people what they are doing there since the waters are restricted. The agents tell Lyle that they are just wrapping up and one of them notices that Lyle's thumb is bleeding. Lyle replies by telling him that robbing body parts isn't what it used to be and then, to Jarod's relief, continues his jog. Sydney is on the phone with Jarod and tells him that he was correct ... the Chameleon took his picture from an old ID that Jarod used when he did a pretend for the Wilmington Arson Squad. Jarod asks Sydney to find out about a Centre simulation called "Starpoints." Sydney tells him that it was Dr. Tommy Thompson's project. He tells Jarod that he is the second person to bring Dr. Thompson up to him and Jarod guesses correctly that the other person was Miss Parker. Jarod urges Sydney to hurry to find the information ... lives depend on it. As Lyle is leaving The Centre, heading for his car, Miss Parker steps out and confronts him. She asks him if he's on his way to a meeting with Dr. Thompson and Lyle tells her to stay out of it. She tells him that she can't because somehow Tommy Thompson is tied to their Mother. Lyle tells her not believe everything she hears from her "inner voices" and Miss Parker then guesses that whatever Lyle is doing has to do with Mr. Parker. Lyle ignores her and starts getting into his car. Before he can, Miss Parker threatens him, saying that if something has happened to their Father and Lyle knew about it, there won't be enough spare body parts in Blue Cove to piece his sorry ass back together. Unfazed, as she walks away, Lyle pulls out his cell phone and makes a call. He tells whoever is on the other end to "Cut off his anesthesia. I'm coming down to see him now and I need him alert." Instead of getting into his car, Lyle begins walking to the other end of the parking lot. He doesn't realize it, but somehow Miss Parker has sneaked back in and now has Broots with her. They follow Lyle to The Center's Sub-Level 20, which is an infirmary. As Lyle enters the room and pulls back the curtain, Broots and Miss Parker are shocked to find that Raines is not dead after all - because there he is, alive, in the infirmary bed! As Broots and Miss Parker continue to lurk in the hallway outside, Lyle approaches him and looks to see if he is recovering from the anesthesia. Suddenly, Raines grabs Lyle's hand - the one that now has Raines' thumb on it - and tells Lyle that he wants his thumb back. Lyle tells him that he wants answers, and if Raines doesn't give them to him, he's going to spread the rest of him around like a download from Napster. Jarod and Ethan are at a new lair - talking about the Chameleon. They are trying to figure out why he is involving Jarod in his bizarre plan, whatever it is. As Jarod once again looks at the pictures that the Chameleon has doctored with his face, he notices something he missed before. In each one of the pictures, his hand is in a different position. Each one has the fingers displaying a separate letter - using sign language! At The Centre, Miss Parker and Broots are telling Sydney about Raines being alive. Sydney tells Miss Parker that it's possible that Raines is the final link to her Mother. Broots says that's why they need him alive. Miss Parker grabs Broots and leaves, telling Sydney to let her know the second that Lyle makes a move. Back at the National Security Agency, Agent Zane buttonholes Jarod and asks him why the Chameleon said "our secrets" when he was talking to Jarod on the phone. Jarod tells her that she already knows the answer ... he's toying with them and saying things like that divides them, makes them question their loyalties. Agent Tracer rushes up and hands Jarod an envelope that was left at reception for him. Jarod is obviously uncomfortable and flips the envelope over a couple of times nervously. Agent Zane doesn't move - she asks him "Gonna' open it?" Jarod has no choice but to do it. Inside the envelope is a red notebook. Jarod smiles and says that it's his notebook - he left it in a taxi. As he walks away with it, Agent Zane remarks snidely that cabbies are thoughtful guys. As Jarod walks away, Agent Zane tells Agent Tracer that she wants everything he can dig up on Jarod Morris - for her eyes only. In the men's room, Jarod hastily opens the notebook. It contains articles on each of the prior assassinations and tucked beside them is a picture of Jarod's Mother, with teardrops drawn on her face. Jarod asks, "Why are you crying, Mom?" and his question is answered when he looks at the next page ... it contains an announcement of a funeral services for him! Jarod attends the "service" on the night and time appointed, at Elk Grove Park. The night is misty and there is no one around the park. Jarod goes looking for whatever it is the Chameleon wants him to find, with gun drawn. His flashlight eventually shows him a coffin with white flowers around it, propped up against a tree. When Jarod opens the coffin, the Chameleon's bird suddenly flies out of it, surprising him. Inside is Jarod's origami figure of Oniseus. Looking at it, Jarod remembers a time at The Centre when he was talking to Eddie about it. Eddie thought it was a crow and Jarod corrected him, telling him that Oniseus is the Greek God of Retribution. Eddie tells Jarod that another one of the pretenders there told him it was a crow. When Jarod asks which one said that, Eddie points to a pretender who is being taken back to his room by a Centre staff member. In The Centre parking structure, Lyle is walking to his car when his cell phone rings. He answers it, telling whoever is on the other end that he has just e-mailed something to an address that Raines gave him. After listening to the response, Lyle seems surprised and tells the caller that Raines is nothing more than a "harmless puddle in a wheelchair" now ... but the caller obviously repeats what they said the first time and Lyle responds with, "Okay, consider Raines a dead man" and then breaks the connection. Lyle turns around and heads back the way he came. Out from behind one of the pillars steps Sydney. He's on his cell phone to Miss Parker, telling her what he just overheard. In the room where he's being kept, Raines is struggling to reach the bedpan that has been placed on a table beside his bed. Clumsy without this thumb, he fumbles it and it falls to the ground just as Miss Parker and Broots enter the room. Miss Parker is unsympathetic to his plight and tells him that she has just heard that someone has ordered his elimination, so he has two choices ... he can answer her questions, in which case she'll get him out of there ... or, he can remain silent and she'll leave him to his fate. Raines makes the obvious choice and answers Miss Parker's question about Dr. Tommy Thompson by saying that he knew him and that he worked at The Centre. Raines stops there, saying that if her were to tell her any more than that, he might have to talk about her Mother. Miss Parker considers for a moment and then tells Raines to talk. Knowing that he has regained the upper-hand, Raines refuses to say more until he's safely out of The Centre. Miss Parker has no choice ... Broots can hear Lyle approaching through the hall. Lyle walks into the room where Raines' has been kept and fires several shots through the white curtains surrounding his bed. Checking to make certain that the shots were fatal, Lyle pulls back the curtains only to find the bed empty and Raines gone. As Broots wheels Raines closer to the fireplace, Raines tells Miss Parker that her Mother was the one who insisted that Raines hire Dr. Thompson. Miss Parker wants to know if Dr. Thompson and her Mother were having an affair, since that would explain her Father's dislike of the man. But Raines tells her that Mr. Parker didn't like Dr. Thompson because he blamed him for Jarod's escape. Sydney says that Dr. Thompson never had anything to do with Jarod. He doesn't understand why Mr. Parker would blame him for the escape. Raines tells Sydney that he can't believe he didn't know ... Jarod didn't escape alone. At his lair, Jarod is explaining to Ethan that three of them escaped that night ... Jarod, Eddie and a third pretender, named Alex. Ethan asks Jarod if he thinks that Alex is actually the Chameleon. Jarod tells him that a ghost is the Chameleon. Jarod remembers the night the three of them escaped ... From their rooms/cells, Alex and Jarod watched a sweeper locking down the facility for the night. The sweeper's radio squawks for sweeper 211 and the sweeper reports that the lock down is complete. Moments later, the sweeper staggers and then falls to the ground. Jarod immediate begins "fishing" for his keys, using a wire which he pushes under the crack in the door. It takes a few moments, but Jarod finally retrieves the sweeps keys and lets himself out of his room. By the time he has done that, two radio calls to sweeper 211 have gone unanswered and alarm bells are sounding. Jarod runs over to free Alex, who asks Jarod what he gave me. Jarod replies that he gave him a natural sedative that was derived from the dust and mold in his room. Eddie pauses, frightened for a moment as he looks up at the surveillance cameras. He tells Jarod that "they" will see them. Jarod replies that they already have and urges Eddie to hurry. Sydney has his face very close to Raines ... he's telling him that he cannot believe no one told him about the other escapees. Miss Parker and Sydney want to know how high up the order to cover it all up originated. Raines says that he doesn't know. All he knows is that the reason for the cover up had solely to do with the pretender named Alex. As Jarod and Eddie are moving down the hallway, another pretender puts his face up to the tiny barred window and wishes Jarod good luck. Surprised to find that Alex has not been transferred out of there as they were told he had been, Jarod pauses in his escape. Alex says that he's never begged before and Jarod tells him that he doesn't know if three people can make it, but they can at least try. He unlocks the door to Alex's room and all three of them run down the hallway. They are all running full out, trying to beat a series of 4 metal doors before they close and seal off the area. The room for all three of them to pass is getting smaller with each successive door. Just before they get to the 4th and final door, Eddie slips and falls. Alex continues through, leaving Eddie behind ... but Jarod stops, unwilling to sacrifice his friend to gain his own freedom. Jarod is having trouble lifting Eddie and the door in front of them is inexorably closing. Alex is safely on the other side and Jarod calls to him to help ... but Alex hesitates and instead of going back to help, just yells "Come on!" to Jarod and Eddie. At the last possible moment, Jarod gets through with Eddie. As Jarod is asking Eddie if he's okay, Alex says "Thank God you made it" and hurries away without waiting for a response. Jarod gives Alex a long look, but there's not time to waste and he and Eddie start running in the same direction that Alex took. When they all reach The Centre Rehydration Core, they are just enough behind schedule to see the door that leads to their freedom sliding shut. Not willing to give up, they all use rungs on a pipe to climb up to a catwalk on the next level. Once they get there, vapor release valves being to emit ... Jarod screams "They know we're here! Cover your faces!!" Everyone to continue moving forward as quickly as they can, but a value activates with a horrible hissing noise just as Alex is passing it and in flinging himself away from the vapor, his body breaks through the guard railing on the catwalk and he the only thing that prevents him from falling down to the mists below is Jarod's quick reaction as he grabs his hand. Alex is dangling over the edge, swinging - only Jarod's tenuous one-handed grip standing between him and doom. Despite Jarod's best efforts, Alex's hand begins to slip down and he pleads with Jarod to not let him fall. His face showing the horrible strain of his attempt to hang on to Alex, Jarod's expression charges to one of horror as Alex's hand slips out of his and Alex falls, screaming, out of sight into the mists. When Jarod's screamed, "NO!!" fades, there is nothing in the room but silence. Jarod brings his attention back to the present as he tells Ethan that he couldn't save Alex. "Alex died?" Ethan inquires. "Or so I thought," replies Jarod. Mr. Raines is continuing to tell Broots, Miss Parker and Sydney what they want to know. He says that Eddie, the other pretender, got away. He says that once they realized that Eddie was sub-par as a Pretender and that Jarod was the only one of any real value, the search for Eddie stopped. Raines says that Alex was found in the rehydration core, nursed back to health and shipped out. After that, he never heard anything more about it. Jarod tells Ethan that he can only imagine what the last 5 years have done to Alex. Miss Parker says that if Alex is somehow tied to Dr. Thompson, then maybe their paths lead to her Mother. In a room somewhere, Alex rips a black hood off of Mr. Parker, who is securely bound to a chair. Mr. Parker asks Alex what it is that he wants, and Alex grits his teeth and replies, "I want everything!" As he hisses the reply, he uses a knife and deftly slices off Mr. Parker's necktie. He looks at Mr. Parker's face and says that he looks mad enough to kill him ... but says that Mr. Parker can't kill him, because he's already dead. Broots enters Miss Parker's office and she tells him to tell her that he found Tommy Thompson. Lowering his voice as he furtively approaches Miss Parker, Broots says that he did not find Tommy Thompson, but he might have cracked Mr. Lyle's phone archive. He gives Miss Parker a recorder that allows her to listen to the call that Mr. Lyle received from Mr. Parker. The message reveals Mr. Parker telling Lyle that "his madman" is inside of his house and tells Lyle to *do something*! After that, there is the sound of glass breaking, a struggle, then the line goes dead. In the parking structure, Lyle is being escorted to his car by two sweepers. A few feet from his car, he tells them that he's okay and they leave. As Lyle fishes for his keys, Miss Parker steps out from behind a pillar, behind Lyle. She tells Lyle that she knows about Raines being alive, about Tommy Thompson and about Alex ... what she doesn't know is why and she wants Lyle to tell her. Lyle tells her that it's simple -- Alex has kidnapped their Father and has made it clear that he'll kill him if Lyle doesn't carry out his every wish. Miss Parker knows that Lyle is still concealing something and plays the recording of Mr. Parker's phone call to him. As she grabs Lyle's newly grafted thumb, she says that Mr. Parker called Alex Lyle's madman and if he doesn't tell her why, she's going to return the thumb to Mr. Raines. Lyle gives Miss Parker a lascivious smile and tells her she's crazy, obviously enjoying her anger and the pain she's inflicting on him. Mr. Lyle tells Miss Parker that after the botched escape attempt, he took Alex to Africa and the Triumvirate assigned him to Mr. Lyle. Lyle tried to mold Alex, but he was too evil to be controlled and Lyle couldn't get anywhere with him. Alex began reporting directly to the Triumverate and happily carried out their dirty work. Lyle says that whatever it is that Alex is doing for the Triumverate now, he's added something of his own to it ... revenge ... payback on anyone who had anything to do with his past at The Centre. Lyle tells her that for all he knows, Alex has already killed their Father. Miss Parker hears whispering in her head - voices. She tells Lyle that their Father is still alive, but Alex will kill him if he isn't stopped. In her office at The Centre, Broots tells Miss Parker and Sydney that Dr. Tommy Thompson never went to Cairo - it was just a cover story. The Centre really sent him to the Renewal Wing, but he isn't there anymore. After his release, The Centre set him up in Westbrook, Maryland. However, Broots has two addresses for Dr. Thompson and he doesn't know which one is the right one. Miss Parker tells Broots to take one of the addresses and she'll take the other. Ethan is sitting in a room lit only by a single candle. He's wincing with the pain in his head, as the voices whisper incessantly to him. On the computer screen in front of him, he's looking at two addresses for Tommy Thompson - both in Westbrook, Maryland. The first is 6250 Canoga Avenue and the second is 4000 Knobhill Drive. Out loud he says, "Miss Parker's in trouble, I've got to help her." Then he begins writing down one of the two addresses from the computer screen. The phone rings in Jarod's office at the NSA ... he's wary and looks up to see Agent Zane right outside the window. He has no choice, so he picks up the phone. It's Ethan. He tells him that he found Tommy Thompson and is faxing both addresses to Jarod now. As he's talking, Ethan is pulling on his backpack, getting ready to go out. Ethan tells Jarod that he loves him, but Miss Parker is in trouble and he has to go warn her. Jarod wants to know what's going on, but Ethan has already hung up and is leaving the building. Jarod's phone rings again and a red light goes off next to it ... it's the Chameleon. Agent Zane is telling Jarod to answer the phone, but before he does, he places what looks like a small cell phone next to the phone that is ringing on his desk. Immediately, the audio reception outside of his office turns to static. They are still able to attempt to track the call, so they focus on that as Jarod answers his phone. Alex is in a house somewhere and he is wearing a plastic glove on one hand. On one of the white cupboards near where he is speaking to Jarod, there is a bloody handprint. Jarod tells Alex that he knows who he is and Alex tells him that it took him long enough to figure it out. As Alex derisively recites the pretends that Jarod has done in the past 5 years to help others, he's walking around the house ... placing a bloody finger print here and there. When he has finished, he uses the tip of a knife to pull a thin piece of plastic off of the finger he's been using to leave the prints ... the prints he's been leaving aren't his! Jarod tells Alex that the things that were robbed from them at The Centre don't have to be the measure of what and who they are, but Alex only laughs - the thinks Jarod is foolish and weak. He tells Jarod that The Centre still controls him through his family ... that his family has to hide and live in fear all the time. Alex says that he's eliminated The Centre's hold over him ... he doesn't have that problem. He tells Jarod to look in the top drawer of his desk. Inside is a newspaper with a clipping about a family that has been mysteriously murdered. Alex says that by taking the lives of his own family he has permanently released himself from The Centre's emotional bondage. Jarod tells him that he's crazy and Alex corrects Jarod, saying that what he is... is "free." And now that he's free, it's "his turn." Jarod tells him that Eddie was "one of us." Alex says that Eddie knew too much. Jarod asks him, "What about me?" Alex says that he is sowing the seeds of Jarod's destruction as they speak. With a smile, Alex hangs up. Then he shorts out the lights. Agent Tracer bursts in to Jarod's office and says they've got the trace. He hands Jarod a piece of paper that says the address belongs to Tommy Thompson, 6250 Canoga Avenue, Westbrook, Maryland. Miss Parker is using a flashlight and moving carefully around a darkened house. She finds a light switch on the wall, but when she flips the switch, nothing happens. She continues moving around the house, calling out Dr. Thompson's name as she goes. In a room that looks like a laboratory, there is a beeping sound ... and over in the corner a timer on a packet of explosives is counting down to zero from 30. Miss Parker continues looking around the room, apparently unable to hear the beep, beep, beep as the timer counts down. In a medical cabinet that has syringes and vials in it, Miss Parker finds the teardrop shaped diamond ring that her Mother was wearing in her vision. As Miss Parker slips the ring onto her finger, she hears the beeping and looks ... the timer is at 5 now, then 4 ... Miss Parker stands up and makes a run for the door. Just as she reaches it, the bomb goes off with a force that shatters every window and blows every door off of the entire building - flying several feet out into the street. Miss Parker is on the floor, sitting up with her back against a wall. She's trapped by some debris that has resulted from the blast and above her, flaming pieces of the ceiling are dangling, threatening to fall on her. She struggles to free herself, but it's no use. Hearing someone walking toward her, she calls out to them, then pauses in shock as she sees her Mother's face through the smoke of the flames that are everywhere. Suddenly her Mother disappears and she hears Ethan calling her name, running toward her as he covers his face to protect himself from the heat and the smoke. He moves the heavy board that has fallen on her leg and as he begins to pull her out, she says, "It was a premonition ... not a dream." Moments after she has been moved, a flaming piece of the ceiling crashes down on the spot where she had been sitting. Ethan tells her that Tommy Thompson isn't there and they both take off to the other address. Jarod, Agent Zane and their team enter a darkened two story house with their guns drawn. As they walk through, Jarod's flashlight falls on the bloody handprint on the wall, which has a trail of blood from it, leading across the floor. Jarod follows it and finds Tommy Thompson sitting in a hair in his office ... dead. Alex has put a sign in his arms and the logo on it matches the logo on the baseball cap that he's been wearing. There's a sudden noise in the closet in the room and all of the agents swivel around and train their guns on it. Jarod pulls the door open and the flashlights fall on Broots, who has his eyes closed against the glare and is pleading with them to not shoot him. Jarod looks right at Broots and tells him that he has the right to remain silent. Then he grabs Broots by the lapels and pulls him out of the closet, bringing him close to his face. Sotto voce, Jarod says, "And I suggest you do." Then he shoves Broots toward the other agents and tells them to cuff him. Miss Parker and Ethan return to the house to find Sydney by himself. He has just finished downloading "Starpoint" but does not tell Miss Parker about it ... he just closes up his laptop and instead tells her that Broots hasn't returned and that Raines was gone by the time he returned. Sydney asks them if they found Dr. Thompson and Ethan and Miss Parker tell him they didn't ... and when they went to the second address they saw police cars around it and an ambulance pulling away. Sydney asks if it might have been Broots in the ambulance and Miss Parker says she hopes not. She tells Sydney to keep her posted if he hears from Broots. Sydney takes his laptop and leaves. At the NSA, Agent Zane has been trying to question Broots, but all that he'll tell her is that he had nothing to do with the murder. Jarod comes in and says that if she'll give him 5 minutes alone with him, he'll find out everything they need to know, but Agent Zane isn't falling for it and she stays in the room. Since he has no other option, Jarod has to lead Broots into saying the right things and Broots is all too happy to play along with Jarod. Jarod looks at Broots' hands and says that the callouses on the ends of his fingers scream computer geek, his complexion says he's a recluse, his clothes tell Jarod that he's unemployed and the mark on his left hand says that he just removed his wedding band. Jarod concludes that "this loser" had nothing to do with the murder. Jarod surmises that Broots was at the scene of the murder because, even though he is married and unemployed, he made a date with someone on the Internet who realized that he was a geek, so she gave him a fake address. To hide his rendezvous from his wife, Broots hitched a ride to the house but when he gets there, no one is home. But the door is open, so he goes in. He sees the dead body, but then he hears the police pulling up, so he hides in the closet. And that, says Jarod, is that ... "Isn't it, Mr. dot com?" Broots knows better than to disagree so he says that the story is absolutely correct. Jarod tells Agent Zane that he'll check out Broots' story and starts to leave the room. Then he stops and tells her that in the meantime, why doesn't she put Broots down in the hole? Miss Parker is asking Ethan why he came for her. Ethan tells her that the voices told him to go there. He says he's never been there before, except in a vision that he's had for as long as he can remember. His vision matches Miss Parker's precisely - right down to the tear drop ring on Catherine Parker's hand. Miss Parker tells him that the woman in the vision is their Mother and Ethan says he knows that now because Miss Parker looks just like her. Ethan wants Miss Parker to tell him everything that she can remember about her. On his computer at the National Security Agency, Jarod is compiling a history for Broots that matches the story he told for Agent Zane. When he finishes, he prints it out and gives it to her. Agent Zane takes it with a good bit of sarcasm - she's not trusting Jarod at all. Jarod's cell phone rings and it's Sydney telling him that he found the Starpoint simulation. He tells Jarod that the 5th undercover agent is a woman, an Ambassador from Sweden. Jarod thanks Sydney and hangs up. Jarod calls the Swedish Embassy and tells them (in Swedish) that he is Olav Bjorn from the Stockholm Daily News and that he needs Ambassador Ulfsoon's Washington D.C. itinerary for his photographers. They tell him that she'll be at the Opera House reception at 4:00 PM. Jarod remembers finding the opera glasses in the boat that was in front of The Centre, then looks at his watch and sees that it's 20 minutes until 4:00 now. Agent Tracer is running down the stairs to tell Agent Zane that the bloody fingerprint from the murder scene belongs to Jarod. She is convinced that Jarod is the Chameleon and goes to find him. She tries to find Jarod in his office, but he's not there. He's in another office, getting Broots signed out. Broots says, "That's it? I just walk out of here?" But at that moment, Agent Zane spots Jarod and yells his name down the hall. Jarod suggests to Broots that he RUN out of there instead ... and Jarod follows him. Jarod and Broots make it to the car and screech away before Agents Zane and Tracer can catch him - but Zane runs back into the building and puts out an immediate APB on Jarod, saying that he's the Chameleon. Miss Parker and Ethan are still talking about Catherine Parker and Miss Parker says that it's very important for her to find out what her Mother meant by her Father knowing all the secrets. Miss Parker tells Ethan that she's always felt her Mother was looking out for her ... like a guardian angel. Ethan tells her that it's true ... she has been. The phone rings and Miss Parker goes to answer it. It's Mr. Parker. As Alex holds a gun in his face, he tells Miss Parker that he needs her to come to the South Shore Shipyard, Berth 20 at 5:00 and that he needs her to come alone. She says that she will come alone. He tells her that she's his last hope and calls her "angel" ... then Alex breaks the connection. As Jarod drives away from the NSA, Broots is in the passenger seat, threatening to have a nervous breakdown. Jarod wants him to quiet down so that he can think, but Broots keeps going on about everything that's been happening. Broots finally gets to the part about Mr. Parker getting kidnapped by Alex, which Jarod didn't know, and Jarod abruptly turns off to the side of the road and tells Broots to GET OUT of the car. At first Broots is okay with that ... until he realizes that he's standing by the side of the road, with no way to go anywhere - not even to a phone. Jarod pulls up to the Kernwell Opera House and runs out to the reception area right at 4:00. He sees the Swedish Ambassador and the gunman (who is in an upper story window) at the same time. Since he can't stop the gunman, he rushes toward the Ambassador, and pushes her out of the way, getting himself shot in the process. As he ran into the Opera House, one of the police officers out front recognized Jarod's picture from the APB and called it in to Agent Zane. Now, another call is being made, saying that there were shots fired at the Opera House and that an officer needs assistance. Holding his wounded arm, Jarod runs back into the Opera House and up the stairs, going after Alex. Jarod goes up one flight of stairs and then another - and from around a corner, Alex comes out and clubs Jarod, knocking him back down the stairs - then he kicks Jarod onto a landing for good measure. He's angry that The Centre considered him "second" to Jarod. Alex tells Jarod that he is the one who "corrupted" all of Jarod's simulations ... he crashed the planes that Jarod made safe, turned his vaccine into an epidemic ... it was all Alex. Furious, Jarod lunges at Alex and gets kicked back onto the landing for his trouble. Alex runs up several more flights of stairs and out a door ... which he then pulls an iron grate across and locks. Jarod can't get past it to Alex. From the other side, Alex continues to taunt Jarod - telling him how easy it was to lure him where he wanted him. Before he leaves, Alex tells Jarod that he has no idea how important to his world, Miss Parker is - and after today, he'll never know how important she might have been. Then Alex runs away from the grate, escaping, leaving Jarod screaming for him on the other side. Agent Zane runs up and levels her gun at Jarod, telling him to "freeze." But the officer who originally called Agent Zane and then saw Jarod push the Ambassador out of the way and get shot himself tells Agent Zane that Jarod didn't hurt the Ambassador ... he saved her life. Jarod tells Agent Zane that he knows she has questions about him, but she once told him that he reminded her of Eddie and he doesn't think that she questions that his heart is in the right place. He tells her that if she will just let him go, he can catch the Chameleon. Driving down the highway at breakneck speed, Jarod calls Ethan and asks him where Miss Parker is. Ethan tells him that she's gone to the South Side Shipyard. At the shipyard, Miss Parker finds the Chameleon's lair, but he isn't there. She calls softly for her Father and hears muffled responses coming from a white container that has been secured shut with a heavy chain. Miss Parker sets her gun aside, grabs a conveniently placed sledgehammer and bashes the lock on the chain until it breaks. She opens the container and frees her bound and gagged Father from a red body bag. She screams at her, asking her what took her so long, then tells her to hurry and untie him since they need to get out of there before Alex gets back. From the stairs, Alex tells them that it's too late -- he's already there. Miss Parker makes a grab for the gun she set down earlier, but Alex gets to it first and immediately turns it on Miss Parker and her Father. Mr. Parker calls Alex a psychopath and gets pistol-whipped for it. While Mr. Parker is on the ground, Alex tells him that there's something he'd like to clarify -- he's NOT a psychopath, he's a sociopath ... there's a difference. He explains that a psychopath is insane and doesn't know the difference between wrong and right. A sociopath knows the difference between right and wrong, but he doesn't have a conscience ... so he just doesn't care. Alex says that The Centre took his conscience away from him, which means that eating a popsickle or blowing Mr. Parker's brains out is all the same to him. From behind Alex, Miss Parker sees Jarod quietly sneaking up on him. Stalling for time, she jumps in front of her Father and asks Alex why he has to shoot him. Alex replies that Mr. Parker was the one who thought that he was inferior to Jarod and sent him to the Triumvirate. Still stalling, Miss Parker says that for years she's been searching for the answers to all the secrets that only her Father knows. She says that she came there today to ask him for the answers. Alex tells her that it's both ironic and funny ... because she's right about her Father knowing all the secrets ... but she's wrong in thinking that Mr. Parker is her Father. At that moment, Jarod calls out Alex's name ... and when he turns around, Jarod swings a large part of a pulley that was overhead, so that it hits Alex in the side of the head, hard enough to knock him off balance. As Alex stumbles and falls, the gun goes off and Mr. Parker goes down. Jarod and Alex fight and Alex kicks Jarod to the ground and runs up the stairs and out the door. Jarod pursues him to the end of a large catwalk-like structure that hangs out over the ocean, many stories high. Jarod holds out his hand and tells Alex to come back in. What was done to both of them was inexcusable, but it isn't worth dying for. Alex tells Jarod that there's no hope for him. He asks Jarod if he has any idea what they would do to Alex if they got him back. He asks Jarod if he even knows why they want him back so much. Alex tells Jarod that The Centre has been chasing him for 5 years ... "You don't really think it's about being a Pretender, do you?" He asks Jarod if he's found his Mom yet and Jarod tells him that he hasn't. Alex says that they are never going to let that happen and Jarod wants to know why not. Before Alex can say any more, he stumbles and falls off the side of the catwalk. Jarod rushes over and grabs his hand, telling Alex that he's got him. Alex looks up at Jarod and says that if Jarod saves him, then Jarod wins. But if Alex falls, only Jarod looses. And he lets go of Jarod's hand and lets himself fall. Jarod watches Alex hit the water hard and waits to see if he survived the fall ... but Alex doesn't surface. In her office at The Centre, Miss Parker is looking at her Mother's picture, and at the teardrop shaped diamond on her hand as she remembers the part of the vision where her Mother says, "Ask your Father. He knows all the secrets" when the phone rings. It's Jarod. He asks her if they found Alex's body and she says that as far as she knows, they haven't ... but since she doesn't often get told the truth ... and leaves the sentence dangling. She says she doesn't know where Broots is and Ethan is gone - she doesn't know if he left by himself or was taken, since he started a note that he never finished. She says that her Father is unconscious and in intensive care, if he is her Father at all. Miss Parker tells Jarod to tell her the truth - then asks him if he knows if Mr. Parker really is her Father. Jarod counters with a question of his own - asking her if she knows why The Centre wants her back so badly ... is it just because he's a Pretender or for something else? Miss Parker tells Jarod that even if she knew, Jarod knows that she couldn't tell him. Jarod replies that he guess that leaves them down the same dead end, with no answers. Jarod's computer tells him that he has mail and he goes to see who is sending him something. Simultaneously, Miss Parkers computer screen tells her that she has mail and then begins showing a picture as it loads ... from the bottom up. On his computer, Jarod is looking at the same picture, loading in the same backwards way. When the faces finally show up, Miss Parker and Jarod both see a picture of their two Mothers ... Miss Parker's Mother standing beside Jarod's Mother. Miss Parker says that the photo is the key to the biggest secret of all. Jarod replies that the first one who finds the answers, wins. In a room somewhere, a shirtless Mr. Raines listens to his computer tell him that his mail has been sent. On his screen is the picture that he has just sent to both Miss Parker and Jarod - of their two Mothers. He looks at it and says, "We're even now, my children. Godspeed." And the screen fades to black on the TNT original Pretender movie ... Please use the green "right arrow" (farther down the page) to enjoy the vid caps that are currently available for this episode.
